Very Lightweight and Portable

The Heininger 5995 is one of the most lightweight and portable propane fire pit’s we’ve ever review. It’s 19-inch fire bowl is perfect for camping, backyards s’mores, tailgating and more, and at only 18 inches tall it can easily fit into a trunk or under a deck for storage. The included 10-foot propane hose and regulator easily wrap around the base when not in use which allow for quick setup and a hassle-free fire. We found that the 21-pound fire bowl was light enough to be moved without an issue and was easily re positioned into the perfect spot. Keep in mind however that you’ll also need to position your propane tank accordingly as well.

Optional Cover and Carry Case for Easy Transport

While the base unit alone is extremely portable, the optional cover and carrying case add another layer of simplicity that seriously makes it a breeze to move the Heininger 5995 around. The cover is a steel lid that rests on the top of the fire bowl and includes stretchable band that attach to the fire pit’s sides using metal hooks for a solid grip. The robust band has a comfortable handle sewn into it allowing you to transport the fire pit with only one hand, and if you’re up to the task allow you to carry the propane tank in the other. The band does have a bit of stretch to it, but don’t be concerned, it is very well built with rugged stitching and can easily hold the weight of the entire unit.

Heininger 5995 carry case is perfect for your portable propane fire pit

If you’re worried about getting mud and grass in your vehicle after a weekend of camping out, you can buy the Heininger Destination Gear Carry Bag. Specifically designed to carry the Heininger 5995 it is made from heavy duty black nylon and has integrated dual carry handles. This custom carry bag it is the perfect way to transport and store your new fire pit as well as any accessories with the internal easy access pocket. Overall though, the entire unit is extremely portable and can be used at home just as easily as on the go.

Super Quick Setup

We know that sometimes even the best laid plans can have a hiccup or two, but were happy to say that setting up this propane fire pit won’t be one of them. Straight out of the box you’ll find three individual labeled lava rock bags which simply need to be tossed into the bottom of the fire bowl. Afterwards all you’ll need to do is hook up the included 10-foot propane hose and regulator to the base and you’re ready to go. Including hooking the hose up to a standalone propane tank the entire assembly took us only 5 minutes to complete and was just about as easy as it gets.

Tip: No need to wash the lava rocks before use, they are ready to go straight out of the box and won’t smoke or cause any foul odors.

We do want to mention that this is a propane fire pit and is not suitable for converting to natural gas usage. While it can be done you’ll be voiding the warranty and it may cause a few potential issues down the line. If your planning to take this route you’ll want to look at natural gas fire pits instead as they are specifically built for that purpose. Another cool thing about the Heininger 5995 is the base can be detached from the main unit with a bit of work allow you to sit the fire bowl inside a regular fire pit or a special housing for a more designer look at a budget price.

Rugged No Nonsense Design

One of the things the Heininger 5995 most impressed us with was the sheet simplicity and ruggedness of its design. Made from durable hardened steel and high-quality components this was one of the few portable propane fire pits that just simply worked. While it may sound odd as you’d expect them all to function the same. The fact that you don’t need firewood, fire starters, or a course on fire-building skills means anyone can operate this unit and have a blast while doing it. After your done with your evening of fun, the lightweight design also means the unit is cool to the touch in around 15-20 minutes and is ready to put away before you head off to bed.

We do want to mention that this unit does not have automatic ignition, and for a few good reasons. First and foremost, in order to be CSA compliant and usable during burn bans it cannot emit sparks, which is exactly what a piezo electric igniter does. Second off, this electric ignition is one of the first components to go bad on nearly any fire pit we’ve ever tested. It’s always easier to just turn on the gas and light it with a regular long lighter or kitchen match and far more reliable as well.

Tip: If you plan to use this in a permanent location or for an extended weekend, bury the propane hose an inch or so under the dirt to stop anybody accidentally tripping on it.

The Heininger 5995 is coated in a durable glossy black heat resistant paint that is not only classy but can stand up to the elements as well. Propane fire pit commonly have issues with paint burning off which causes the metal underneath the rust, this is not something we’ve come across with this unit. Plus, the metal connections and solid couplings are leak free and when in use emit almost not hissing which is a common issue with cheaper propane fire pits.

Great Flame, No Smoke, No Smell, No Fuss

In the past we’ve reviewed a large selection of fire pit, from the classic wood burning variety to luxury granite fire pit tables. However, without a doubt this has one of the largest flames we’ve seen on any unit and can easily rival a traditional wood campfire in majesty and looks. We loved the fact that the Heininger 5995 has a perfect clean burn and is absolutely smokeless. There is nothing worse than having to play musical chairs as the smoke drifts with the winds and gets in your eyes and all over your clothes. Plus, the 2-foot flame is totally stunning and can easily light up an entire backyard for evening entertainment and toasty s’mores.

Tip: As with any fire pit, heat dissipates easily in the wind, try to sit with your back blocking the wind for maximum warmth.

Another great feature about the design of this portable propane fire pit is how all the heat is directed upwards and outwards. This allows it to be used safely on green grass, wood, TREX or concrete as the base of the unit doesn’t get hot and won’t damage anything underneath it. Due to using propane as fuel, you’ll also not have to worry about sparks and crackling embers which can be damaging to any pop up canopies or soft top gazebos your may have nearby.

8-12 Hour Burn Time with a Standard Propane Tank

One of the downsides of a propane fire pit is of course the need to carry propane bottles with you. However, we were pleased to see during our tests that a standard 20-pound propane bottle can last anywhere from 8-12 hours depending on the flame height that you’ve chosen. It’ll obviously last for a shorter amount of time if you leave it in raging bonfire mode for the entire night, but sometimes that’s just what the doctor ordered.

Tip: Turn the flame adjustment knob to low when starting to stay safe and avoid a giant fireball, you’ll be able to greatly extend your burn time. Also, buy a propane tank yourself and skip the refiled rentals, they are often underfilled and not worth the price.

On maximum, the Heininger 5995 is able to produce flames up to 2 feet in height and will absolutely blast out the heat making it a perfect winter fire pit and capable of keep your guests warm on even the coldest of nights. Keep in mind though, if you looking for sheer warmth and not looks you’ll want to look at some of the best patio heaters we’ve reviewed instead, as they provide a much larger area of heat at the cost of beautiful open flames.

Perfect Fire Pit for Burn Bans and Backyards

With a sizable 19-inch diameter fire bowl you’ll easily be able to fit 6-8 guest around the Heininger 5995 and maybe even squeeze in a few more on particularly cold nights. This portable propane fire pit is perfect for small balconies and RV’s as it takes up hardly any space and is easily stored away after use. It is also equally as good for backyard patios and car camping trips due to its high heat output and easy to use design making it ideal for quick evening entertainment. Plus, with it being CSA compliant and usable during most burn bans you’ll be the envy of the campground with your golden s’mores and crackling hot dogs while everyone else is sitting miserable in the cold, dark night.
