How To Choose An Outdoor Ceiling Fan: What You Must Know
If you’re ready to purchase an outdoor ceiling fine as a first-time owner, you should read through this section slowly to get an idea of what you should have at the back of your mind.
For non-first timers, you’re welcome to skip if you already know these.
Location: Porch, Patio, Gazebo

The location of your house greatly determines what type of outdoor ceiling fan you should install. This is because outdoor ceiling fans are designed with certain weather conditions in mind.
It won’t make sense to install an outdoor ceiling fan meant for dry regions in a wet region. We listed the three different categories of outdoor ceiling fans below.
Type of Outdoor Ceiling Fan

There are different categories of outdoor ceiling fans and each of them is designed to work in a specific type of environment. They include the damp, wet rated, and dry ceiling fans.
These types of outdoor ceiling fans are known by their UL ratings. The UL rating specifies the amount of water an outdoor ceiling fan can be exposed to.
Let us take a look at the three categories of outdoor ceiling fans.
Damp-rated Ceiling Fans
Damp-rated ceiling fans are designed to withstand moisture, therefore, if your house is situated in a moist environment, a damp rated outdoor ceiling fan should be top on your list.
Even though a damp rated outdoor ceiling fan can resist moisture in the air you shouldn’t install it where it will be exposed to liquid all day long. this is because the electrical parts you like the motto and the blades can be damaged by liquid.
A damp rated ceiling fan can easily be identified by a stamp on its body.
Dry Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fans
The dry rated ceiling fans are the exact opposite of the damp models. They are not meant to be installed in places where they will be exposed to moist weather.
Dry rated ceiling fans are mostly installed inside the house but some people install it outside on the porch. A dry rated outdoor ceiling fan is good for people that aren’t living in wet regions.
As you would expect, a dry rated ceiling fan is known by its UL stamped rating.
Wet Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fans

A wet rated outdoor ceiling fan is everything you want in an outdoor ceiling fan. It is designed to withstand the toughest weather conditions all year round whilst serving you.
Unlike dry and damp rated ceiling fans, the motor on a wet-rated outdoor ceiling fan is properly sealed so that liquid substances cannot get in and damage it.
With a wet rated outdoor ceiling fan, you won’t have to bother about removing the fan every season. You just leave it there and it takes care of itself.
Having known these categories of outdoor ceiling fans, the next things to consider are listed below.
Size and Clearance

Size is another important factor you need to consider when you are shopping for an outdoor ceiling fan. The size of the outdoor ceiling fan you end up buying is dependent on the size of the place it is going to be installed.
Therefore, it is important to bear in mind the size of the porch in question before you make your purchase.
By knowing the size of the installation area, you can crosscheck it with the coverage area stated on the fan’s packaging.
Clearance, on the other hand, can also affect the size of the fan you will buy. In simple terms, clearance refers to the space between the ceiling and the fan, the fan and the floor, and of course, between the fan and the wall.
These three spaces must be taken into consideration so that you get something that fits in properly and serves you well.
As a rule of thumb, a standard outdoor ceiling fan should be about 12-inches from the ceiling, 84-inches from the floor, and 24-inches from the fan’s blade to the nearest wall.
Material
Aluminum, coated metal, and stainless steel are the three most common materials used for making outdoor ceiling fans. We, however, suggest stainless steel and aluminum models as they both last longer than fans made with coated metals.
A Sloping Ceiling

This is an often neglected factor.
A sloping ceiling needs special attention hence if your outdoor ceiling fan will be installed on a sloping ceiling, you must make sure it comes with an adapter.
If you have a regular outdoor ceiling fan, try and purchase a mounting kit for a sloping ceiling before mounting the fan.
Consider the color and style
Does the color of the fan blend with the décor on your porch? It can make or mar entire décor. You don’t want that to happen, do you?
As for the style, there are a lot of options to choose from just as you have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to outdoor lights.
The style you end up choosing should be able to blend in nicely with the already existing décor. This is very important.
Type of Mount

The mount refers to what will be used to hang the fan to the ceiling.
If the ceiling is far off the ground i.e. very high, you’ll need a hanging rod.
However, if the reverse is the case, you’ll not need a hanging rod.
In the second case, a hugger mount is what you’ll need.
Energy Efficient
If you’re concerned about increasing light bills, then you need to look out for outdoor ceiling fans with an energy-efficient mark.
A Good Motor
Fans depend on their motors to function properly. In fact, a fan is useless without its motor. Die-cast aluminum motors are one of the best in the market. They’re quiet during operation, and have a good lifespan – plus the air movement is great.
Controls – Ceiling Fans with Remotes

Depending on your preferences, you can opt for a remote-controlled, wall controlled or pull-chain outdoor ceiling fans,
Remember these control options can lead to a price difference in similar model fans.
A remote-controlled fan isn’t such a bad idea, but it’ll probably cost more than its non-remote controlled counterparts.
Number of Blades

The number of blades a fan has is also worth noting. A lot of people think personal preference is the reason for choosing a 3, 4, or 5-blade fan.
Well, it’s not news that the more blades a fan has, the quieter it is during operation as it circulates less air. This is because the higher number of blades tend to slow down the fans motor.
However, with recent advancements in technology and more efficient fan motors, new generation outdoor ceiling fans have almost the same performance irrespective of the number of blades they have.
Blade Pitch
The blade pitch refers to an angle that ceiling fan blades tilt to. This is already preset by the manufacturers who designed the fan. It’s of no major concern by the way although we included it because it can influence how much air a fan’s blade can move when turned on.
Ceiling Fans with Lights

An added feature in your fan can be optional. A typical example is a fan that comes with lighting. Many people don’t need this as they already have properly lighting setup on the porch.
If the fan you’ve selected has a lighting option that won’t cost you an extra cent, by all means, grab it with both hands. Anything other than that, well, it’s up to you to decide to get it or not.
Outdoor Ceiling Fan Reviews
Now that you’re aware of the thing you need to consider, take a look at some of the most sought after outdoor ceiling fans that met our selection criteria.
#1. Best Outdoor Ceiling Fan – Honeywell 50513-01 Belmar Outdoor LED Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Damp Rated
Color: White
Blades: 5
Material: Wooden textured plastic blades, steel body
Features: 52-inch ABS plastic all-weather blades, bulb enclosure for a bulb, damp rating, 3-speed reversible motor, tri-mount compatible, strong build quality, has a pull chain, made from steel, wood, and plastic.
We start off our review of the best outdoor ceiling fans with the leader of the pack which is none other than the Honeywell 50513-01 Ceiling Fan.
The Honeywell 50513-01 Ceiling Fan is a damp-rated outdoor ceiling fan although a lot of people mistake it for a wet rated outdoor ceiling fan because it’s advertised as having all-weather blades.
There’s no doubt it’s nicely built – by merely touching it, you can feel the build quality. But that shouldn’t make you install it against the manufacturer’s instructions.
The fan is made from a variety of materials including wood, plastic, and of course, metal. It’s available in only white color – bad for people looking for other colors.
As we earlier mentioned, the blades which measure about 52 inches are made from ABS plastic. They are designed to be all-weather resistant and are going to last long.
In fact, the chances of the blades bending are slim, unlike blades that are made from metal.
The Honeywell 50513-01 Ceiling Fan is designed to be hanged using any of the tri-mount hanging options depending on the type of ceiling you have. It can be installed on a sloped ceiling or a standard ceiling.
Whatever the case may be, installing the fan is a breeze because everything you need to install it is included.
Let’s not fail to mention that the fan sports a 3-speed reversible motor. With the reversible motor, you can use the fan during winter.
If you’d like to use a bulb with your fan, you can add an A15 LED bulb or 2 E26 bulbs as you wish. You can also remove the bulb enclosure and replace it with the no bulb enclosure.
The Honeywell 50513 outdoor ceiling fan doesn’t come with remote control. Though it’s not an essential feature, having it around will help a lot. Also, it’s not the quietest but that doesn’t mean it’s noisy.

#2. Budget Pick – Honeywell Duvall 52-Inch Tropical Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Damp Rated
Color: oil rubbed bronze
Blades: 5
Material: metal, wood
Features: Available in 2 color options, sports a 4-speed reversible motor, easy assembly using Quick Hang technology, 5 wet-rated 52-inch bronze wicker blades, and energy-efficient.
If you’re on a budget, the Honeywell Duvall 52-Inch Tropical Ceiling Fan should be top on your list of cheap yet quality outdoor ceiling fans to buy.
The Honeywell Duvall ceiling fan is made from a combination of plastic and wood materials. It has an overall damp rating, however, the 5 blades are all wet-rated.
Honeywell offers the Duvall outdoor ceiling fan in two color options; oil-rubbed bronze, and the white color. If constant cleaning will be a chore for you, we suggest you stick with the bronze variant.
For installation, the fan comes with what is known as a Quick 2 Hang technology. With this technology, the time it takes to install the fan is reduced significantly.
Just like the Belmar model we reviewed above, this Duvall model also comes with a tri-mount installation kit. You can install it regardless of the type of ceiling you have in your home.
The Honeywell Duvall 52-Inch Tropical Ceiling Fan comes with a 4-speed reversible motor which helps the fan to circulate warm air when it’s winter.
For those of us who are interested in having a light on our fan, we’re sorry to disappoint you because the Honeywell Duvall 52-Inch Tropical Ceiling Fan doesn’t support any lights.
In addition to that, the fan doesn’t come with a remote. Instead, you can use a pull chain to control the speed of the fan.
Any reservations?
Yes. The is advertised as being wet-rated when in reality it’s only the blade that is wet-rated while the rest of the fan is damp rated.
Other than that, this energy-efficient Honeywell Duvall 52-Inch Tropical Ceiling Fan is in all ramifications strongly built and pocket-friendly.

#3. Best Outdoor Ceiling fan with Light Honeywell Belmar 52-Inch Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Damp Rated
Color: White
Blades: 5
Material: Metal, wood
Features: ETL damp-rated blades and body, comes with pull chains, sports a 3-speed reversible motor, sizable 52-inch blades, available in white and bronze colors, 12-degree blade pitch
This Honeywell Belmar 52-Inch Outdoor Ceiling Fan is closely related to the Honeywell 50513-01 Ceiling Fan which we reviewed at the beginning of this article.
Both fans share a few features but not the same aesthetical structure.
As you’d expect the Honeywell Belmar 52-Inch Outdoor Ceiling Fan is damp rated whilst the blades are wet-rated. For fans like this, we suggest installing them under a shade.
The fan is made from a combination of metal and wood. It’s strongly built, there’s no doubt about that. However, being partly wet rated is a deal-breaker for us considering the location the fan will be installed.
Honeywell offers the Belmar 52-inch fan in white and oil-rubbed bronze colors, same as the colors on the Honeywell 50513 outdoor ceiling fan. That’s not the only thing both fans have in common.
The Honeywell Belmar 52-inch outdoor ceiling fan also features a 3-speed reversible motor like its counterpart. This also makes the fan handy in winter when it’s used in reverse.
There is no remote control on the fan, rather, you have the traditional pull chain to deal with. The fan does pull a good deal of air when turned on, thanks to its blade pitch which is at about 12 degrees.
As for the blades, there are five of them rotating with elegance to give you the cool air you crave for.
We do have a few reservations about the fan.
The fan’s color is definitely not bronze, in our opinion. We think it’s somewhat gray, or charcoal.

#4. Best Outdoor Ceiling fan for Patios – Hunter 59214 Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Damp Rated
Color: Black
Blades: 4
Material: Metal, Wood
Features: Damp rated, WhisperWind reversible motor, available in 2 colors, comes with a pull chain and LED lights, 4 washed-walnut roasted maple blades, comes with 2 and 3-inch down-rods for easy installation, a blade pitch of 13 degrees.
The Hunter 59214 Outdoor Ceiling Fan offers us an opportunity to look at another quality outdoor ceiling fan other than the ones made by Honeywell. For a company that has been in business for the past 125 years, we didn’t expect less.
This outdoor ceiling fan is made from a combo of metal and wood, a combo we’ve seen over and over again in the course of this review.
The fan which looks somewhat casual is built for damp locations – damp rated. It comes with a few features that we mentioned below.
First, the Hunter 59214 Outdoor Ceiling Fan features 4 washed walnut roasted maple blades. This is a huge downgrade from the 5 blades we’ve seen so far in during this review.
Secondly, as a damp rated fan, it’s meant to be installed in a covered patio or porch as the case may be. The fan comes with a pull chain which we expected for an outdoor fan in this price range.
It also comes with 2-inch and 3-inch down rods that make installation a lot easier for anyone. Unlike the Honeywell outdoor fan’s we reviewed above, this fan doesn’t come with a tri-mount.
You’ll have to shell out a few bucks to get the mount from the nearest store.
The fan has a blade pitch of 13 degrees and honestly, the blades pull a good deal of air with so much ease. Installing the fan is fairly easy but it can be time-consuming for a newbie installer.
For Hunter to issue a lifetime motor warranty on this fan, this is a clear indication that the reversible motor is built to last.
We do have a few reservations about the Hunter 59214 Outdoor Ceiling Fan.
The fan doesn’t come with a bulb although it supports one. You’d have to purchase one for yourself. Also, installing the fan on an angled ceiling can be a little bit tricky.
And of course, you’ll be unable to adjust the light level on the fan because there’s no control for that.

Wet Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fans
In this section, you’ll find three wet-rated ceiling fans. These ones can be installed in an uncovered patio or porch since they are built to withstand moist weather conditions for a long period of time.
#5. Best Wet Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fan – Westinghouse Lighting 7204300 Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Wet Rated
Color: Oil Rubbed Bronze
Blades: 4
Material: Metal, plastic, and glass
Features: rustic design, four 52-inch oil-rubbed bronze dark walnut blades, lifetime motor warranty, LED light, wet rated, energy-efficient, tri-mount compatible.
If you’re looking for an all year round outdoor ceiling fan, this is it.
Yes, the Westinghouse Lighting 7204300 Outdoor Ceiling Fan is the perfect fan to install in your home on the beachfront without getting worried about damage caused by the abundance of water in the atmosphere.
The fan is a wet rated fan – all-around wet rated. It’s properly designed with materials such as metal, plastic, glass (for the light) that can withstand excess moisture in the air.
Even the motor is properly covered, hence won’t be affected.
Design-wise, the Westinghouse Lighting 7204300 Outdoor Ceiling Fan has an eye-catching rustic design. We saw this design on the Westinghouse Lighting 7800000 Brentford 52-Inch Outdoor Ceiling Fan.
There’s a lamp bowl at the center which can accommodate a 10W A19 LED bulb if you decide to add the bulb. The lamp enclosure is surrounded by metal bars which give it a somewhat retro look – that rustic feeling.
We like the fact that the light can be wired out to a dimmer switch.
Westinghouse equips this ceiling fan with a lifetime motor. The motor has three-speed options and a reversible switch that allows you to use the fan in winter to circulate warm air.
Installing the fan can take a little bit of time, It is tri-mount compatible although all the mounts aren’t shipped alongside the fan. However, you can purchase additional mounts and down rods for the fan.
With respect to energy efficiency, the Westinghouse Lighting 7204300 Outdoor Ceiling Fan has a fairly good energy rating. How much energy it uses depends on how long you keep it running.
There’s no remote control – you have an easy to pull chain for controlling the fan. It is, however, remote control adaptable.
Any reservations?
We think the light bulb enclosure is too frosted that it gives a dim light. Some may like it, others may not. Also, replacing the bulb requires removing the entire light kit area – pretty tough work!

#6. Emerson CF621SW Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Wet Rated
Color: Satin White
Blades: 5
Material: Metal, wood
Features: Satin white finish, five 52-inch leaf-like rattan inspired blades, wet-rated, can be hooked up with a light, remote and wall control adaptable, lifetime warranty on the reversible motor.
The Emerson CF621SW Outdoor Ceiling Fan sports a different design from what we’ve seen so far in this review. Available in two color options, it is undeniably an outdoor ceiling fan worth spending money on.
As we mentioned earlier, it is available in two color options; satin white and Venetian bronze. For this review, we took a look at the satin white model.
It looks great no doubt, and the five custom rattan-inspired blades are a beauty to behold especially in the Venetian bronze model. It still looks good on them satin white variant too.
Simply put, it’s a good fan for beach wet areas just like the Westinghouse Lighting 7204300 Outdoor Ceiling Fan and the Hunter 53347 Outdoor Ceiling Fan which we reviewed above and below respectively.
Emerson takes the quality of this 52-inch fan seriously and so, they included a lifetime warranty on the motor. Did we mention that the motor is reversible?
The Emerson outdoor 52-inch ceiling fan doesn’t come with remote control, instead, it uses a pull chain. However, you can add a remote control or a wall control unit to it.
With respect to energy efficiency, the Emerson 52 inch ceiling fan is energy efficient. If you would like to use a bulb with your Emerson 52 inch outdoor ceiling fan, you can install the light bulb kit.
Installing the fan and adding the light kits aren’t difficult tasks although they take little time to get it done.
Unfortunately, the fan doesn’t come with the light kit so you have to purchase that can separately considering the price range and the fact that other fans in this range come with their own light kits.

#7. Hunter 53347 Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Wet Rated
Color: Premier Bronze
Blades: 5
Material: Metal
Features: 13 degrees blade pitch, premier bronze finishing, Wet rated for open outdoor locations, tri-mount capable, comes with a pull chain, five 52 inch blades, reversible Direct drive motor.
Being the second Hunter outdoor ceiling fan to grace our review list, should we expect anything less from the Hunter 53347 Outdoor Ceiling Fan?
When compared to the Hunter 59214 Outdoor Ceiling Fan which we reviewed earlier in this article, the Hunter 53347 stands tall above it with a handful of features and quality.
First, the Hunter 53347 Outdoor Ceiling Fan comes with five 52-inch blades. The premium bronze covered blades have a 13 degrees blade pitch which makes them efficient in circulating air.
The entire fan is wet rated unlike the damp-rated body and wet rated blades we saw on the other Hunter fan. Aside from that, it is made of metal. The fan’s simplistic design is visible and isn’t obstructed by any fan lights.
However, you can purchase an outdoor wet rated light kit for the fan and install it if you wish.
The fan doesn’t come with a remote control but it can be turned on using a light switch on the wall and the speed controlled via the pull chain.
There’s a Direct Drive motor with the revered reversible feature that makes the fan useful all year round. As we mentioned earlier, the motor on the fan is wet rated hence you have nothing to worry about.
Any reservations about the fan?
We think the motor is a little weaker than we expected. It’s not the slowest per se, but it doesn’t propel the blades as fast as its counterparts on this list.
Other than that, the fan is a good deal for a budget wet-rated outdoor ceiling fan.

#8. Monte Carlo 3MAVR60BK Maverick Ceiling Fan
Size: 60-inch
Location Rating: Damp Rated
Color: Matte black and dark walnut blades.
Blades: 3
Material: Wood, steel
Features: premium finishing with matte black dark walnut painted blades, made from wood and steel, three 60-inch blades, damp-rated fan, available in multiple sizes and multiple colors, can work with Alexa.
The Monte Carlo outdoor ceiling fan is not for the faint-hearted – not with the hefty price tag it comes with. But if quality, great design, longevity are top on your list, it’s worth buying – for a damp rated outdoor ceiling fan.
As we’ve hinted already, one of the things that will turn your face away from the fan is the price. It’s hefty, but you get good value for your money.
Monte Carlo offers the 3MAVR60BK Maverick Ceiling Fan in a variety of color options. They include
- The matte black finish with dark walnut blades (review model)
- Aged Pewter with light grey blades.
- Brushed steel with dark walnut blades.
- Matte black with dark walnut blades
- Brushed steel with koa blades
Each of the available color options is built to high standards and features 3 blades. In addition to being available in different color options, there are also different sizes to choose from.
Available sizes include 60-inch, 70-inch, 88-inch and 99-inch.
The Monte Carlo 3MAVR60BK Maverick Ceiling Fan is remote controlled but the control doesn’t end there. With the Bond Hub, you can use your Alexa voice commands and turn on this smart fan.
However, you’d have to purchase the Bond Hub separately. Is it worth it? Well, if you’re a lover of smart home appliances, then you should be fine with it.
For the 70-inch model, you can control more than one fan with one remote by simply programming the switches on the remote to specific fans.
The fan features a 6-speed reversible motor – the highest we’ve seen so far. Its energy rated and can offer as much as 50% savings on your energy bills for ceiling fans.
With a 13-degree fan blade pitch, you shouldn’t expect less when it comes to moving a good deal of air.
We do have our reservations about this fan.
It’s a tad expensive but we understand that it comes with additional features missing on the fans we’ve reviewed so far. In addition to that, installing it on a sloped ceiling can be a tough nut to crack since it’s not really tri-mount compatible.

#9. 60″ Turbina Max Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Size: 60-inch
Location Rating: Damp Rated
Color: Matte black and dark walnut blades.
Blades: 6
Material: Metal
Features: Available in 3 color options with light and no light kits, six 60-inch blades, 22 degrees blade pitch, remote-controlled, damp rated, comes with a 6-inch down rod, reverse capable motor with 3 speeds
The Casa Vieja 60-inch Turbina Max outdoor ceiling fan is a much pocket-friendly outdoor fan with remote control. It bridges the price gap between the fans top of the shelf outdoor ceiling fans and bottom priced models.
With 6 blades, it’s not surprising to see that Casa Vieja took the fans blade pitch a little bit higher than the conventional 13 degrees we’ve seen in the course of this review.
The blades are powered by an energy-efficient reversible motor with 3-speed levels. In addition to that, you get to control the fan with the remote control that ships with it.
If you have more than one of this fan, you can program the remote control and easily control them with just one remote.
There are multiple color variants and styles to choose from but there isn’t another size save for this 60-inch model.
As you already know, the fan is damp rated and requires a covered outdoor area where it won’t be exposed to too much moisture. Additionally, the fan shouldn’t be installed in locations with close proximity to saltwater.
Unlike the Monte Carlo 3MAVR60BK Maverick Ceiling Fan, mounting this fan is a lot easier even on a sloped ceiling. It comes with a 6-inch down rod.
If you like fans with light, you can opt for a variant of the Casa Vieja 60-inch Turbina Max with a light kit.
Any reservations about the fan?
Yes. The fan cannot be installed flush with the ceiling. In fact, Casa Vieja stipulates a distance of 10ft off the floor for the fan.

#10. Casa Delta-Wing 52″ Modern Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Size: 52-inch
Location Rating: Damp Rated
Color: Bronze
Blades: 3
Material: Wood, Metal
Features: Three 52-inch oil rubbed bronze blades, remote-controlled, damp-rated, variety of options to choose from, comes with a light and no-light kit as well as a 6-inch mounting down rod.
Wrapping up this review, we take a look at the Casa Delta 52-inch outdoor ceiling fan with remote control. It’s more like a downgraded version of the Turbina Max we reviewed above.
If you want a bigger blade, there’s a large 66-inch blade available to meet your need. The Casa Delta-Wing 52″ Modern Outdoor Ceiling Fan features three blades, all sporting an oil-rubbed bronze finishing.
There are other color options available and there’s also a light kit option for those who love fans with light.
Furthermore, the fan is controlled via a handheld remote that cycles through the 3-speed options of the motor. As for the motor, it is reversible and allows you to use the fan all year round.
With its damp rating, the fan shouldn’t be installed in any location that will expose it to too much moisture or saltwater.
If you’d rather like to power on the fan via a wall switch, you can do just that. However, you need the remote to be able to cycle through speeds. Additionally, the fan (for the light models) cannot be used with a dimmer switch.
For your installation, you’re provided with a 6-inch mounting rod. You can install with a shorter rod.
Any reservations about the fan?
If you get the fan with the light kit, you’ll have to deal with a bright light that cannot be turned down. Also, the bearing for installation will be a bit wobbly if you don’t install it properly.
