A wheelbarrow is one of the efficient machines we can’t help but appreciate its invention. It is designed to quicken our ability to transport items from one point to another. There are manual and motorized wheelbarrows in the market.
Motorized wheelbarrows take the benefits of a manual wheelbarrow a step further and make moving heavier items much better. In this article, we shed light on durable, efficient, and feature-packed motorized wheelbarrows.
More so, we included a list of things you should consider when buying a motorized wheelbarrow. But first, here’s our top pick…
#1. Best Motorized Wheelbarrow – Landworks Super Duty Electric Powered Wheelbarrow
The LandWorks Super Duty Electric wheelbarrow is a meeting point for many of the wheelbarrows we reviewed in this article. It is ruggedly built like the Dirty Hand Tools Power Cart and has the beauty of Greenworks GC40L410 Wheelbarrow.
This wheelbarrow is powered by a 180W AGM battery which is able to propel it up to its maximum load capacity of 330lbs. It has a sizeable 4cu. ft. hopper for carrying items of different kinds.
It has two-speed options and can last for up to 5 hours depending on what you’re using it for. Climbing hills with heavy loads just became a lot easier!
Factors To Consider When Buying A Motorized Wheelbarrow
No one buys a motorized wheelbarrow every year except if they’re running a construction company. Therefore, it’s imperative to buy one that will serve you continuously for a long time to come.
Longevity is as important as the build quality and the load capacity of the wheelbarrow. In the lines below, we listed some of the features and factors you should consider.
The size here refers to the size of the hopper. The hopper/cargo tub/load bin is the hollow space in the wheelbarrow where you keep the items you want to haul. The larger the hopper, the more the number of items you can carry at once. Bear in mind that no matter the size of the hopper, there will always be weight restrictions on the wheelbarrow.
For efficiency, the motor that powers your wheelbarrow should be tough enough to support the barrow when it’s loaded.
It should also be able to provide continuous power to the barrow via the battery since you’ll probably be using the barrow for a couple of hours.
If you own a gas-powered model, then you only top up on the gas while you work. It turns out that most of the motorized wheelbarrows on the market are electrically powered, just like these string trimmers.
Your motorized wheelbarrow can either be gas or battery-powered. Whichever one you chose, be sure you can maintain the power source.
If you spend more time hauling items with a wheelbarrow, then a gas-powered model will serve you better than a battery-powered model. But then, you’d have to deal with the engine noise.
On the other hand, battery-powered models have lesser runtime and sometimes cannot be used for hauling items up very steep slopes.
Wheels or Track
A quick look at motorized wheelbarrows in the market will reveal something; motorized wheelbarrows either have wheels or tracks. Both are good and are suitable for different situations and terrains but they also have their disadvantages.
Furthermore, you should also consider the number of wheels on your wheelbarrow. The more wheels it has, the more the weight it can support and the easier it will be to push it. But this also leads to an increase in the price of the wheelbarrow.
Tracks, on the other hand, are a tad expensive than wheels because of how they’re built and the materials used. Getting a wheelbarrow with tracks is great for people living in large estates with sloping hills and rough terrain.
If you have a smaller outdoor space on your property, we suggest sticking to wheelbarrows with wheels.
Load Bin or Hopper
Some motorized wheelbarrows often have removable hoppers. The removable hopper is a handy feature since it can turn the wheelbarrow into a flatbed.
As a flatbed, you can carry a plethora of items on the wheelbarrow that you cannot ordinarily carry if the hopper was on.
The material the hopper is made of is very important. If it’s made of cheap plastic, you shouldn’t consider buying it. Instead, opt for wheelbarrows with heavy-duty plastic or steel hoppers. When emptying the hopper, you’ll tip it regularly to empty the contents properly.
If the hopper is made of cheap plastic, it’ll get damaged easily. A hopper made from cheap plastic will last a couple of weeks for light work that doesn’t require tipping the wheelbarrow.
All wheelbarrows have a maximum weight limit and carrying loads that exceed this weight limit will damage it immediately or in the long run. Instead of carrying loads above the wheelbarrow’s capacity and putting tension on the motor, it’s better to move the items twice.
With extra attachments, you can convert your motorized wheelbarrow into a mini excavator or attach it to a trailer with a towing hook. Keep your eyes on wheelbarrows that have the option to attach accessories.
They tend to be the most beneficial in the long run.
Take note of the battery life of your motorized wheelbarrow. If it’s below 2 hours, look for another alternative battery or get multiple batteries. This will save you a lot of stress when you’re working with the wheelbarrow.
If you own many outdoor tools from a lot of brands, then it’d help to check if their batteries can work on your wheelbarrow. You can save a few bucks if it does. It will also mean you have extra batteries which equate to more runtime.
Motorized Wheelbarrow Reviews
Here’s our take on the most sought after motorized wheelbarrows on the market.
#1. Best Motorized Wheelbarrow – Landworks Super Duty Electric Powered Wheelbarrow
Max. Weight Capacity: 330lbs
Features: 330lbs max weight capacity, 4 cu ft. of space, up to 5 hours battery life, can haul loads up a slope with 12 degrees incline, quiet, dual speed options, heavy-duty 13” PU tires.
Our top pick for the best-motorized wheelbarrow is the Landworks Super Duty Electric Powered Wheelbarrow. It is a compact-sized wheelbarrow with respect to the size of other wheelbarrows and as such, is a favorite for many.
There are quite a ton of features that make the wheelbarrow worth owning. Let’s start with the load capacity.
The Landworks Super Duty electric wheelbarrow is powered by 2 12V 7Ah AGM rechargeable batteries. These batteries, in turn, power the 180W brushless motor which propels the wheelbarrow. The battery can power the wheelbarrow for up to 5 hours. However, this depends on the load and the terrain.
This Landworks wheelbarrow is able to carry loads up to 330lbs even up a 12-degree slope. When it’s in use, the wheelbarrow is quiet and produces no smog like the gas-powered models. In addition to that, there are speed controls for the two-speed options.
Let’s not fail to mention that the Landworks Super Duty Electric Powered Wheelbarrow has 13” PU tires that make movement easy.
In all, the Landworks Wheelbarrow is affordable, powerful, compact-sized and strong enough to haul everyday items in your yard.
#2. Large Capacity – Dirty Hand Tools Power Cart
Max. Weight Capacity: 660lbs
Features: gas-powered engine, 660lbs load capacity, tipping handle, 4-speed transmission option, 7” track wheels, 4ft turning radius, strong build quality, easy to control, steel hopper with removable sides and can be tipped to 60 degrees.
The Dirty Hand Tools Power Cart is a tough motorized wheelbarrow made for tough terrains. It’s certainly geared towards people who live in large estate properties surrounded by woods and hills.
For anyone that intends to do heavy-duty work around the home, this motorized wheelbarrow is definitely for you. Under the hood, you’ll find a 6.5HP 196cc gas engine that comes with a 4-speed transmission.
The engine is gas-powered and is able to propel the wheelbarrow even when it’s carrying items that equate its maximum load capacity. By the way, the maximum load capacity of the unit is 660lbs; this is twice the load capacity of our top pick.
With respect to the build quality, the Dirty Hand Tools Power Cart is built for toughness and ruggedness. It features a steel hopper that can tilt up to 60 degrees. Furthermore, the steel hopper has three removable sides that make emptying the hopper much easier.
There are 7’inch track wheels on this wheelbarrow and they respond quickly to the speed changes. It is easy to control the wheelbarrow and we think you’ll love the even weight distribution it has; the weight distribution and the wheels make navigation on all terrains easy.
In all, if you’re looking to do a ton of outdoor work, then you should look the way of this wheelbarrow.
Max. Weight Capacity: 200lbs
Features: 200lbs weight limit, quick charge battery, 40 minutes runtime, 10’ self-propelled wheels, off-loading assist function, durable dust resistant body.
Despite costing a lot more than the Landworks Super Duty Electric Powered Wheelbarrow, this Greenworks electric wheelbarrow doesn’t have many great features that justify its high price tag.
Let’s start with the battery which gives only 40 minutes runtime under load and ideal conditions. By ideal conditions, we mean good grass or flat pavement. This abysmal battery life can be lower when you’re hauling items uphill.
However, the battery charges quickly within 2 hours and can be used with other batteries from other Greenworks appliances.
That aside, the Greenworks GC40L410 40V Garden Cart also has a maximum weight capacity of just 200lbs. Pretty small if you must say – this goes to show that the wheelbarrow is designed for lightweight work.
But in all these, it makes up for the flaws by offering a durable body, 10” wheels as well as a 3.8 cu. ft. of cargo space in the hopper. The hopper seems to be made of heavy-duty plastic material.
Aside from its high price and poor battery life, it’s a great motorized wheelbarrow for light haulage activities.
Max. Weight Capacity: 220lbs
Features: 2Ah battery with fast charging technology, up to 3 hours battery life, 220lbs maximum weight capacity, battery interchangeable with other snapper tools, 3.7 cu. ft. hopper.
The snapper XD motorized wheelbarrow shares the same features with the Greenworks GC40L410 40V Garden Cart but it costs less. It is powered by an 82V battery 2Ah battery with a runtime of about 3 hours, 6 times more than the GreenWorks wheelbarrow.
It takes about 30 minutes to charge the battery to full capacity. And of course, the Snapper XD battery is interchangeable with the batteries of other Snapper XD outdoor products.
Additionally, it has a maximum weight capacity of about 220lbs, a tad higher than the Greenworks and almost 110lbs less than the Landworks Super Duty Electric Powered Wheelbarrow.
The Snapper XD SXDUC82 Self-Propelled Utility Cart has a fold-away steel hitch that allows you to tow items along with the wheelbarrow. It has a 3.7 cu ft. hopper.
We like the manual braking system works well for holding the wheelbarrow at a spot. Controlling the wheelbarrow’s speed when rolling down a slope isn’t easy since there’s no manual-brake for speed reduction.
In all, the Snapper SD wheelbarrow is pocket-friendly and
Max. Weight Capacity: 660lbs
Features: 6.5HP engine, heavy-duty 660lbs capacity, zero-turn radius, 3-speed options, easy to use and control, 4 cu ft. hopper, 7-inch track wheels.
The YARDMAX YD8103 Track Barrow is the last but certainly not the least motorized wheelbarrow on our list. It shares similarities with the Dirty Hand Tools Power Cart which we reviewed earlier. However, there are slight differences.
Aside from the 660lbs maximum weight capacity, the YardMax wheelbarrow track also has a 4 cu ft. hopper. The hopper is made from high-quality steel material and can be opened on the sides. This makes it easy to empty its contents.
Additionally, the wheelbarrow features 7” track wheels that allow for movement on different terrains and surfaces.
Let’s not forget to mention that the YARDMAX YD8203 Track Barrow is gas-powered. It’s powered by a 208cc 6.5HP Briggs & Stratton engine with three-speed options to go with it. Controlling the speed is easy as there are three levels.
There’s also an efficient braking mechanism and going downhill is as easy as ABC. The hopper tilts up to 40 degrees easily allowing you to empty its contents. We like the YardMax motorized wheelbarrow but not its price.
However, it’s top of the line quality and features are worth overlooking.
There’s no need to break your back carrying heavy loads around your property or your garden. Having a wheelbarrow sure helps but with a motorized wheelbarrow, the task becomes as easy as you can ever imagine.
