Another great feature that comes in very handy are S hooks. These handy little devices allow you to hang barbeque tools on your Big Green Egg table so you can easily reach them while cooking. In general though if you’ve got enough table space available these are not necessary and are simply a luxury. Overall, there are a ton of great features on many of our top options and choosing the right ones are simply a matter of taste and preference.
Materials
When it comes to materials you’ll basically be deciding between metal and wood, specifically hardwoods. While there is no real winner, we tend to like wooden tables for their rustic appearance and outdoor charm.
If we’re talking metal, in general a high-end Big Green Egg table will be made out of 304 stainless steel. This is a corrosion and rust resistant material option that is extremely durable and perfect for the outdoors. It also has a very industrial and professional look giving it a clear outer appearance. On the flip side though, it is very easy to dent, particularly if the metal sheeting is quite thin. As such, if your accident prone or tend to drop things you might want to opt for a wooden table instead.
A wooden table on the other hand should always be made out of a kiln dried hardwood and coated with a few layers of polyurethane. Wooden tables are heavier and typically more stable than their stainless steel counterparts. They are also a bit less industrial looking and tend to be easier on the eyes. We also like how they don’t show dents nearly as much as a metal table.
However, they do have their downsides. After a few season of use you may want to consider refinishing a wooden Big Green Egg table to bring it back to a like-new condition. You’ll also have to place a paver or Table Nest under your Big Green Egg to prevent the high heat from scorching the wood. Overall though, wood still makes for a great, classic looking table material.
Size
While a lot of people will tell you that bigger is better, that’s not entirely true. When picking out a Big Green Egg table you’ll want to measure your available space to determine what size fits your needs.
However you should almost always get something that is right around 32” tall or counter top height. This is a great ergonomic counter height and prevent back strain and having to bend over. How to Clean your New Table
To clean a wooden Big Green Egg table you’ll just need a bottle of mild countertop spray and a soft cloth. Avoid scratchy and rough cloths and sponges as they can damage the polyurethane finish and make the table wear faster.
Simply spray the table down and wipe it off, no special skills are required and if you clean the table often it’ll be a much easier task. Typically a polyurethane coating makes cleaning a lot easier and sauces and foods don’t tend to stick as much as on plain wood.
If instead you’ve opted for a stainless steel table, you’ll want to get some specialized stainless steel cleaner and a soft microfiber cloth. This unique formula provide a superior cleaning solution and help to maintain the mirror bright finish. It also has a bit of a buffing compound which gets rid of any stubborn stains and marks. We want to mention that stainless steel will require a bit of elbow great to get perfectly clean. You have to wait for the cleaner to dry and harden before buffing it off, but they results will be worth it.
How to Maintain a Urethane Wood Table Surface
Over time, even the most durable of urethane coatings will wear down, collect scratches or otherwise need to be touched up. The good news is this is a fairly easy process that can be done quite quickly.
All you’ll need is some fine to medium fine steel wool, a paint brush and some spar urethane. We recommend the paint bucket style urethane as opposed to the spray type due to a more even coat and a better final product. To maintain the surface, simply rub the steel wool back and forth across any damage areas to get a rough texture.
Afterwards apply a layer of urethane to seal the area once any flakes or powder has been cleaned. You can repeat this process multiple times for a longer lasting finish. In reality you’ll only need to refinish your Big Green Egg table once every few seasons though.
