Are Outdoor TVs Worth It?

There are many reasons why you may be considering buying an outdoor TV. They’re great for entertaining guests and hosting parties and summer BBQs.

If you enjoy cooking outside during the summer, then an outdoor TV means you can watch the game simultaneously, or even a family movie to keep the kids entertained. 

Outdoor TVs are becoming increasingly popular, and although their quality and definition aren’t as impressive as their indoor alternative, it’s certainly still watchable.

Outdoor TVs are usually built to withstand changes in temperature, rain, and even snow. They also usually come fitted with technology that prevents the screen from glaring in direct sunlight, allowing you to watch your favorite shows outdoors during the day in the middle of summer. 

However, just like regular indoor TVs, outdoor TVs can get pretty expensive. However, if you think that having one will improve your outdoor space and entertainment opportunities and you don’t mind spending a little extra cash, then it may be worth getting your hands on one. 

Can I put a normal TV outside?

As outdoor TVs can be pretty expensive, you may be tempted to cart your family room TV outside when it’s needed. Alternatively, you may be considering buying an indoor TV specifically with the intention of keeping it outdoors.

However, you really shouldn’t do this unless you’re willing to risk irreparable damage to your TV. Perhaps the biggest problem with using a normal TV outside is that they don’t react well when exposed to moisture.

Additionally, a regular TV will need some extra TLC before being used outdoors, such as protecting the delicate parts from direct sunlight. 

Also, if the humidity levels in your outdoor space are over 80%, then you’ll begin to experience moisture collecting on the components of your TV. If this is allowed to continue for long periods of time, your TV may become prone to mold, mildew, and other kinds of harmful buildups. 

Using a normal TV outdoors is likely to break it, therefore we recommend opting for an outdoor alternative. Even under an overhang, the TV will be exposed to weather, humidity, and elements that will damage the internal components and void most manufacturer’s warranties. 

Does Walmart sell outdoor TVs?

Yes! Walmart sells a huge range of outdoor TVs, as well as a whole host of accessories and optional extras. Their outdoor TV selection is quite extensive, and there’s something for all sorts of budgets.

However, even the least expensive outdoor TV sold at Walmart will still set you back more than a thousand dollars. For this price, you can get your hands on a full-shade weatherproof 4K LED outdoor TV. This is the average price for an outdoor TV of its size (43 inches). 

On the other end of the spectrum, Walmart sells high-end luxury outdoor TVs, too. In fact, their most expensive model will set you back more than six thousand dollars! That price is not unheard of for its type, a 75” outdoor 4K UHD Smart TV with outdoor optimization. 

Additionally, Walmart sells a bracket that is designed and manufactured specifically for outdoor TVs. It fits most TVs that measure between 37 and 70 inches with VESA 200X100mm to 600X400mm.

How do I proof my TV for the outdoors?

While we don’t recommend using a regular indoor TV in an outdoor space, we understand that you may still want to try. Fortunately, there are a few adjustments you can make and preparations you can put in place before moving your TV outdoors that can help to protect it and prevent it from getting damaged.

Some of these solutions require just a little common sense, whereas some others will cost you some money. However, it’s important to note that using any combination of these preventative measures may still void your warranty, so be sure to check the conditions beforehand. 

Location, Location, Location!

Arguably the most crucial decision to make is the location of your outdoor TV. Placing your TV in the right area in your outdoor space can help to prevent sun damage. 

For example, consider hanging the TV in a spot that remains in full shade all throughout the day. If complete shade isn’t possible, facing the TV towards the north or south can be less damaging than when facing east or west.

Hide it away

An outdoor TV cabinet is a great way of protecting your screen and prolonging its lifespan. Cabinets are great as they can be sealed and made waterproof with sealant, and you can make other adjustments and extra measures as you see fit. Also, hiding your TV in a cabinet will reduce the risk of vandalism and theft. 

Cover it up

If a cabinet would look a little too bulky in your space or you don’t want to spend the extra cash, an outdoor TV cover is a great inexpensive option. You can get your hands on a high-quality soft TV cover for less than a hundred dollars.

Much like the tarp you’d find draped over a grill or motorcycle, these covers are usually made from waterproof material that’s designed to prevent the weather from penetrating the fabric.

Enclose it

Similar to a cover, TV enclosures protect your screen from the weather and accidental damage or theft. We love that enclosures can still be used while the TV is in use, so you’re always protected.

Depending on your budget and protection needs, the right enclosure can be a great investment, and there are plenty of types and styles to choose from.

However, you get what you pay for in terms of quality. A poorly built enclosure may cause problems in the future, such as insufficient waterproofing and heatproofing.
