With over 16 brilliant colors to choose from, high quality materials and a rock solid design, the Abccanopy Kingkong is one of the undisputed leaders when it comes to ez pop up canopies. From the durable double stitching down to the tough nylon feet, this unit is built for easy, maintenance free operation and is well worth the price. We have previously reviewed some of the best pop up canopies on the market and as you’d expect, the Abccanopy Kingkong made the cut. Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at what truly makes this instant canopy stand out from the crowd.
As expected from any outdoor instant canopy, the Abccanopy Kingkong was quite easy put together in under 10 minutes, using absolutely no tools. Straight out of the cardboard shipping box, the canopy and frame come completely separate. However you can quickly attach using four integrated velcro loops located around the top most section and in the center. Afterwards the unit easily spread apart to unfold the ultra strong truss bars creating a durable roof for the assembly. Finally it’s a simple matter of using the easy to operate pinch-free push button sliders to lock the legs into one of three positions depending on your preference.
Tip: If you want more height adjustment levels you can simply drill holes in the metal legs at your desired location. Make sure to cover the holes with a rust resistant paint afterwards or the bare metal will rust in the first heavy rain.
We did find that two people are ideal for assembling this canopy, however one person can do it in a pinch. Also, assembly does get easier with time. Straight out of the box the fabric was a bit stiff, but it loosens up after a few uses. Disassembly is just as easy, if not easier. Simply reverse the steps above to take down the unit, during our first try we managed it in a little over 3 minutes. Once we folded it up and stuffed it in the provided carry bag we were ready to head towards our next adventure.
If there is one thing that we had to pick as the defining feature of this canopy, I’d have to be the sheer durability and thought that went into the overall design of the unit. The 1-¼” square shaped legs are built from thick steel making them extremely resistant to bending and wind damage.
Meanwhile the 300 Denier polyester canopy has double stitched heat sealed seams for maximum waterproofing and weather resistant. Topping it off the canopy also has reinforced stress point to ensure the peak pole remains centered and can’t punch through the canopy during heavy winds.
We also found during testing that heavy rains posed little to no issue for the Abccanopy Kingkong. The tightly stretched canopy repelled rain easily and the unique high peeked design allowed for zero water accumulation due to the spring-loaded mechanism near the top of the canopy.
Tip: If you know you’re in for some strong winds, make sure all the frame screws are tight before setting up the rest of your equipment. Over time vibration from transport can cause some to loosen.
The high quality polyester fabric with PU lining also proved great at blocking even the strongest rays of sun. Compared to some of the other canopies we’ve tested over the years, we could immediately feel the Kingkong kept us cooler as soon as we walked under it. The silver reflective layer underneath the canopy did a great job of reflecting heat outwards and keeps us quite comfortable even during the hottest point of the day.
During our testing we’ve gone through canopies both big and small, but we all agree that 10’x10’ canopy is our favorite size. Large enough to have room to move around in, but small enough that it is still easily packed up for transport and storage. We were especially pleased to see that unlike some of the competition this canopy actually measured 10’x10’. Some manufacturers tend to cut a few inches off for cost savings and that really irks us, especially when we have a pre-planned space already in mind for an exact sized unit.
We also loved that this instant canopy was about 2’ taller than all of the other’s we’ve seen. This is great for commercial canopy booths and vendor stall when you want be seen and make a statement. When this extra height is paired with one of the more vibrant color choice you’ll have the easiest canopy stall to find in the whole area.
So if you’ve read any reviews of this unit on other site you’ll have most likely seen an intense debate on whether or not it ships with a carry bag. We can safely assure you that it does ship with a rolling carry bag. An boy is this bag a godsend. With an oversize internal pocket for the frame, and a perfectly sized outer pocket for the canopy it is just the right size to fit this beast of a pop up canopy. Keep in mind however that this is a large unit and as such only folds down to 12” x 12” x 64” which is rather large for most cars to transport.
We’d suggest you measure your transport vehicle to ensure the Abccanopy Kingkong Canopy fits prior to purchasing. If not you may want to look at some other great options instead. The large carry bag size does have the added advantage of being very easy to pack and we had no issues sliding the whole unit, even with the canopy still on, inside.
We also loved that the canopy can with a detailed list of repair parts in case of any accidents on the road. While expensive, replacing a few minor parts is more cost effective than buying a whole new canopy.
Areas for improvement
Even though this is one of the best pop up canopies out there, we did find a few areas that could still be improved upon. One of the features we like to see in high end canopies are double tiered canopy vents, these help to circulate are and reduce the impact of heavy winds. As the Abccanopy Kingkong doesn’t have the top vent or ship with stakes, we’d suggest you take a look at some of our best canopy weight bags and select a set like the Ohuhu Canopy Weight Bags. These will provide much needed weight and enhanced wind resistance for a safer experience.
The only other gripe we had, if you can even call it that, is the weight of the unit. Due to its stable construction and thicker material the Abccanopy Kingkong weighs in at 50 pounds making it one of the heavier pop up canopies on the market. However, don’t let that deter you from buying it as that weight is a sign of solid construction, unlike some of the other “disposable” canopies that we’ve seen in the past.
