If this wood burning fire pit piqued your interest, you’re probably interested in something the simply feels like it belongs in the outdoors. With the Sunnydaze Cast Iron fire pit you can be sure you’re getting a quality product that is built to last. The fire pit is made from 3/8” solid cast iron and is extremely resistant to heat damage. Many of the cheaper alternatives use ¼” or even 1/8” thick sheet metal as a means to cut cost, this fire pit does not. While cast iron is a great material you do have to be aware that due to the nature of the metal is it a bit more brittle than steel. So basically, you don’t want to go dropping this fire pit on cement as it is prone to developing hairline cracks it if takes too much of a pounding.

Straight away the first thing we like about this wood burning fire pit was that it is available in two color options. You can grab it in a rustic rust color or a modern day grey steel color. Both of the choices look great in a backyard and it is really up to personal preference. If you do opt for the rust color, make sure you wear gloves when handling it as the rust coating can come off as it was produced through a natural oxidization process, similar to how real rust forms. For both color choices, you have the option of simply coating them with a high heat rust resistant paint similar to Krylon High Heat Black to ensure they stay pristine for many seasons to come. If you’re looking for even more protection from the elements, you’ll want to pick up a Nylon cover for your fire pit as well. Sunnydaze offers a Round Black Fire Pit cover that fits the bill perfectly.

Assembly of this fire pit is about as easy as it gets. With a total of three legs and two handles that connect with 12 bolts and nuts you’ll be ready for your first outdoor fire in a matter of minutes. There has been a few reviews about the bolts rusting together, if that happens to you a quick spray with WD-40 and a bit of a shaking should solve it in a few seconds. Once assemble we recommend you drill a ½” or1” drain hole on the bottom of the fire bowl. This really helps to increase the life of your outdoor fire pit as it prevents water from pooling in the bottom and expediting the rusting process.

Speaking of the fire bowl, we were extremely impressed with the height that it was elevated from the ground. The included legs provide 10 inches of clearance which allow this wood burning fire pit to be used on all surfaces, including wooden decks and lawns. If you plan on using it over combustible surfaces, we recommend you get a spark screen to prevent any rogue embers from escaping. During out tests we found that the elevation was more than enough to stop grass from getting scorched and at the worst cause our deck to get a bit warm to the touch, so nothing to worry about. If you’re looking for a compatible spark screen Sunndaze offers a fire pit spark screen specifically designed for this fire pit and has 24” and 30” varieties available. If you opt for the 34” fire pit you have to go a size up and grab a 36” screen which works perfectly but does hang slightly over the edges of the fire bowl.

The total vertical height of this fire pit is 16” tall regardless if you go with the 24”, 30” or 34” model. That height is perfect for getting in close and roasting some evening s’mores and a few sausages over a roaring fire. The low profile of this fire pit also makes it great for camping and packing it up in your car. Plus, it is so easy to disassembly you can remove the legs and handles in under 10 minutes to stuff it in even the smallest of vehicles. Weighing in at only 35 lbs. for the largest option it is very easy to pick up and move around.

Once you get your fire in the right location and started for the night you’ll notice just how well the Sunnydaze Wood-Burning Fire Pit Bowl works. With its wide but not too deep design the fire is very well ventilated and gets enough oxygen to have an amazing burn. The wide fire bowl also allows you to shove even the largest of logs and yard debris inside while enjoying the starts. If you opt for the smaller 24” model you’ll enjoy a cozier experience as you gather around. As the Native Americans might have said “Indians build small fire, sit close, white man build big fire, sit faraway.” Regardless of the size and color you choose however, we can assure you that you’ll have many enjoyable nights.

Overall this is an incredible fire pit that brings a sense of warmth and ambiance to your yard. With it’s rustic appearance, solid construction and functional design it is the perfect wood burning fire pit to add to your backyard, patio or deck. The few flaws is has are easily corrected with a bit of paint and a drill and allow you to have an exceptional fire pit at a fraction of the cost. We would give this fire pit a solid A+ as it does everything you could ever want with no extra frills to get in the way.
